About The Vineyard

The estate vineyard was planted and tended by three generations of a single family. The wine is summit of the family’s labor – for it preserves the founding of a home and a vineyard in the deep, misty cool of the Jameson Canyon, the tilling of the gravelly soil, the tending of the windswept vines, the team’s stalking the rows for ripeness.

Winemaker Notes

“Chardonnay grapes are pressed using one of our small bladder presses and the juice sent to barrel for 100% barrel fermentation. Yeasts indigenous to the vineyard and winery perform the fermentation; nothing is added to the grapes or juice prior to or during fermentation. The use of French oak creates the subtle oak flavor, spice driven flavors that enhance our award winning single vineyard chardonnays . The idea is to open and disturb the barrels as little as possible, and to leave the environment inside the barrel integral and self-regulating. This regime exposes the wine to small amounts of oxygen when it is at its youngest and most vigorous stage; this is a kind of inoculation against later oxidation.

The Chardonnay is strong and will age slowly and well. The long, undisturbed period in barrel allows a graceful and extended contact with the lees and allows anything clouding the wine to settle out so thoroughly that filtration becomes unnecessary.”

Nestled in the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, you’ll find Maldonado Family Vineyards; a small Mexican-American family owned winery. Owner/Winemaker Hugo Maldonado comes from a vineyard management background, working alongside his father Lupe Maldonado and learning the importance of vineyard care at Newton Vineyards. The winery is in the form of a cave looking south toward the Palisade Mountain range in Calistoga. Though small, it accounts for the roughly 6000 case production that Maldonado Family Vineyards currently produces under the Maldonado Label and their second label, Farm Worker.

Maldonado Vineyards
Nearly fifty years ago, Lupe Maldonado was living in a small farming community in Michoacán, Mexico. After moving to California, Lupe began working in the vineyards of Napa Valley. He made a name for himself in the valley as a hard, dedicated worker and was invited to join the team at a new winery, Newton Vineyard.
