“Black garnet color, aromas of plum pudding with balsamic reduction, roasted strawberries, toasted cinnamon stick, and cacao nibs with a slightly chewy, vibrant, dryish full body and a long heirloom grape jelly, cracked peppercorns, sun dried tomato, and molasses finish. A peppery, spicy Petite Sirah that will pair with all manner of grilled fare; balanced, complex and highly satisfying”. 90 points, Excellent – Wine Enthusiast
“Our 2015 Petite Sirah has blackberry fruit on the nose and the palette, which is typical for this varietal. We like a little Zinfandel and Syrah in the blend to make it more approachable at a younger age. As usual, it’s a big, tannic wine that will last for a very long time yes has a smooth, lush mouthfeel that keeps you coming back for more. This wine pairs very well with roasted meats or all by itself.” – Winemakers/Owners Brian Callahan and Steven Gower
Fermentation: partial whole berry carbonic fermentation using native yeast, basket pressed after 14 days on the skins
Barrels: French Oak, 20% new
As grape growers and winemakers, Owners Brian Callahan and Steven Gower approach farming in a sustainable and earth friendly manner. In addition to their own fruit, they also source from select vineyard sites owned by growers with a similar philosophy who have likewise embraced environmental practices in vineyard management. While using California fruit, Brian and Steven apply Old World winemaking techniques. They are destemming the fruit instead of crushing it and they do natural, extended fermentations using open top fermenters punched down several times a day. Crux also ages their wine in bottle for an extra year, so when you open it you’ll find a wine that is ready to drink and one that shows off the unique characteristic of each varietal.
