Winemaker's Tasting Notes

“Our 2015 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, concentrated and brooding wine. Those familiar with our wines will recognize the signature aromas and flavors of our distinct site. Aromas are a study in ripe black fruits, savory herbs, fennel, anisette, graphite and black tea. A refined expression of Oakville, balanced with freshness of citrus oil, resinous cedar and the warmth of vanilla, and plum in the mouth. While initially restrained, a lush sweet entry opens to a dense and weighty mid-palate finishing with the enticing and complex tension of cocoa and espresso with a hint forest floor and rich earth." – Winemakers Anne Vawter & Jennifer Rue
Appearance medium purplish garnet
Aromas layers of black cherry, black licorice, dark chocolate, integrated tobacco, fresh rosemary, lavender, dried herbs de provance aromas
Palate structured tannins lead to black currant, blackberry, wild blueberry, cocoa powder, Earl Grey tea, black truffle
Food Pairing Suggestions
Marbled steak such as ribeye, rabbit ragu or meatloaf will stand to this wine's structured tannins. Blue cheeses or aged gouda will also pair beautifully.

About The Vineyard

Hoopes Vineyard is located in the southernmost part of Oakville, where Yount Mill Road divides the Oakville and Yountville sub-appellations of Napa Valley. The vineyard grows vigorously. Nestled against a hill, and sitting firmly in the flood zone

of the Napa River, Hoopes Vineyard has uniquely diverse and fertile alluvial soils despite the small ten-acre size. Farmed and picked by hand, the unique Hoopes fruit receives the highest attention throughout the entire grape-growing process.

The microclimate is very cool in the evening and mostly moderate heat throughout the day. The vineyard produces some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the valley due to the unique site, clone, and soil combination.

Winemaker Notes

After three years of drought, cool Spring temperatures extended bloom yielding an even lighter crop load. This smaller crop brought an early harvest with wonderful concentration of flavor and lush mature tannins. We also extensively sorted our fruit both in the field and across the sorting table at the winery.

“Our flagship wine is, and always has been, the soul of our farm. Crafted from our ten-acre vineyard in the heart of Oakville, planted in 1983, it was previously a fruit source for a number of famous estates until we started winemaking ourselves. The soil is dense in geologic composition, featuring four different types of soil. One, volcanic, is unheard of in the Oakville sub-appellation, with the exception of To Kalon, and is rarely, if ever present, in valley floor vineyards. We harvest this vineyard in fourteen small batches, despite the small size, to ensure the perfect balance of acid, flavor, and tannins.”
