Lake County, Napa Valley’s northern neighbor, is producing some serious, top quality wines. And Beaver Creek Vineyards is definitely one to watch.
Led by Winemaker Martin Pohl, Beaver Creek Vineyards believes in the purest form of biodynamic farming with little human intervention. Martin is determined to ensure each bottle of wine is the most authentic version of Mother Nature. His approach is simple. “Let nature create the wonders and we will work hard to support and enhance her efforts.”
This vision came to life in 2007, when Martin and then partners discovered Horne Ranch, the home of Beaver Creek Vineyards. After careful planning and impeccable execution, the existing vineyards were meticulously converted to organic and biodynamic farming practices. The winery received its CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) certification in 2009, followed by the Demeter Biodynamic certification in 2010. The process is now a thriving home to a variety of animals and gardens – chickens, sheep, bees, olives, and a walnut orchard – that support the organic and biodynamic processes and contribute to the vitality of their wine.
Beaver Creek Vineyards’ passion is Cabernet Sauvignon. Hand crafted from beginning to end, the harvesting is done by hand and the winemaking process is completely natural with no additives used. Additionally, Martin does not produce the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon each year. Like vintage Champagne, he only makes this wine in extraordinary vintages, and makes it his mission to educate people on the differences in organic and biodynamic winemaking and how it contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
