In 2011, the Davis family purchased the century-old estate winery and began their ambitious restoration project to create a distinguished winery. Mike Davis has a long and fond association with the Napa Valley. Growing up in San Mateo County just south of San Francisco, his family spent summer vacations at the Napa Valley Ranch Club. Davis Estates is the culmination of a life long dream. Here the vision is carved from this historic site as an estate winery focused on wines of the highest pedigree.
Davis Estates is a family owned and operated estate located in Calistoga, Napa Valley. The barn on the Davis Estates grounds was built in 1916, and the property was developed in 1800s. The family is entirely involved in the fabric of day-to-day operations and together with their world-class team, they are committed to building a sustainable property while crafting premiere Napa Valley wines to be enjoyed today and for generations to come. Mike describes the winery’s production as small, “like a grain of sand on the beach”.
Davis Estates has vines planted in Calistoga, Rutherford, Carneros and Howell Mountain in a variety of rich alluvial, hambrich, volcanic rhyolite pale clay and boomer loam soils. The terroir, vast elevation gains and micro-climates produce phenomenal fruit with a robust range of taste profiles. The estate vineyard in Calistoga is located in the northernmost region of the Napa Valley. Totaling a 155 picturesque acres, 11 acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc. The estate sweeps up from the famous Silverado Trail on the valley floor to 1,100 at its crest. This vast contrast of elevation, combined with a wide range of well draining volcanic soils and micro-climates, creates an ideal place to grow their preeminent grapes.
Winemaking at Davis Estates is led by Cary Gott, fourth generation California grape grower and highly renowned winemaker. For more than 40 years, Gott has mastered his winemaking skills, producing world-class vintages for some of California’s most acclaimed wineries. Raised on a winery in Escalon, California, Gott became familiar with the intricacies of the wine business at an early age as he watched his father produce wines from many wineries up and down the wine roads of California. Gott started his career in 1970 when he joined Sterling Vineyards in Napa Valley. In addition to Davis Estates, Gott’s roster of distinguished wine clients include Round Pound Estate, Rams Gate, Lawer Estates, Calla Lily, Pillar Rock, D. R. Stephens, Match Vineyards, Lieff Vineyards, Piña Cellars and Fantesca Estate. Gott also owns and operates Vineyard & Winery Estates in Napa Valley, a company designed to help people begin and operate super-premium wineries and vineyards. He works closely with vineyard managers to monitor and select grapes and then directs the winemaking processes. His utmost dedication, commitment and respect for the land are expressed in his elegant wines, which demonstrate his attitude and passion for all things wine.
Assistant Winemaker Walter Leiva joined the team in 2016. A Napa native whose first memories consist of picnics with his family at wineries in Napa and Sonoma, as time passed, he turned his passion for wine into a career. Graduate of Napa Valley College’s viticulture and oenology program, Water has had the pleasure of working under the tutelage of some of Napa Valley’s top winemakers and consultants. Residing in Calistoga near Davis Estates winery gives him a bit more spare time where he can be found working on his garden or hiking and camping with his family. As assistant winemaker, working under the general direction of consultant winemakers, he is responsible for all aspects of wine production on the estate. The enchanting blend of science, nature and art is something that deeply resonates with Walter.

A visit to Davis Estates is truly a one-of-a-kind, bonding experience. Upon arrival guests are welcomed by a 50-foot “new-antique” windmill, while the symmetry and balance of a floating Kugel ball water fountain feature – a 4-foot, 8″ thick granite sphere resembling a grape lifted and floating on a Cabernet Sauvignon shaped leaf – draws you in to the winery.
The outdoor terrace provides visitors with sweeping panoramic views of the northern Napa Valley and estate grounds. Guests can enjoy incredible scenery, while relaxing in one of Davis Estates’ welcoming porch swings. In addition to daily wine tastings and tours (by appointment), a spectacular commercial kitchen and indoor pizza oven means Davis Estates is equipped to function as a premier event space, which also will host members-only parties and dinners.
Guests can enjoy an Estate Wine & Food Pairing experience which includes artfully prepared seasonal delicacies by Executive Chef Mark Caldwell (Chateau Sovereign Winery, J Vineyards).
The unique Cave Tour & Tasting experience allows you to travel back in time on a tour of the historic property, offering a glimpse of how Davis Estates developed, starting in the vineyards and continuing into the Howard Backed designed, cutting-edge winery and 11,000 sq. ft. of caves.
A show-stopping experience is the Rolls-Royce inspired round private tasting cave with an octagon-shaped, jewel-box-like room that members can enter only with an infrared biometrics scanner – something unforgettable and spectacular – queueing the members’ chosen sound, like Andrea Bocelli’s “Con Te Partirò”. Mike Davis loves big reveals saying, “People like to experience positive surprises, so we try to incorporate it everywhere on the property, from the moment the gate opens to the tasting experiences”.
