For the last 41 years the Stare family has been making upscale wine out of their Dry Creek Vineyard fruit. Inspired by the Loire Valley, proprietor David S. Stare was the pioneer of this previously unrecognized wine region. With a degree from MIT and a professional background with the B&O Railroad, winemaking may not have been the most obvious choice, but David was determined to stake his claim in the wine industry. He began taking classes at the University of California, Davis and decided the orchard he had purchased was, in fact, a perfect location for grapevines, as he had hoped. Against the advice of several renowned viticulturalists, David planted Sauvignon Blanc and the resulting wine was a resounding success. In 1985 Dry Creek Vineyard coined the term Meritage to describe a Bordeaux-style blend made in California. This led to the founding of the Meritage Alliance in 1988, a term widely used today in strict accordance to standards. Also, want to try your hand at winemaking?
