Howell Mountain Vineyards (HMV) and the famed Beatty Ranch Vineyard, the vineyard site for all HMV grapes, are led by grower Mike Beatty. Mike, along with his two sons, farm the land and do so with conscious awareness for the environment by embracing bioharmonic philosophy. HMV was one of the first wineries since the region’s revival post-prohibition.
The Beattys continue a long lineage of farming in the family. Raised in Ohio, Mike Beatty developed a passion for wine and moved to Napa to pursue a dream of producing the highest quality grapes. Mike picked up some viticulture student textbooks and taught himself the trade. That was in 1970 and the family still resides on the property of Beatty Ranch Vineyard.
The 34 acre Beatty Ranch Vineyard site, planted with equal parts of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot, is located on Howell Mountain, a highly desirable location for Cabernet growing. The goal of the Beatty family, Winemaker Bryan Kane, and the vineyard crew (many of whom have been with Beatty Ranch for 30 years) is to intervene in grape growing and winemaking as little as possible and let the unique terroir of Howell Mountain shine.
