High above the Napa Valley floor on Spring Mountain sits a vineyard where the soils are responsible for dramatic and intense fruit associated with ultra-premium wines. In the 1800s, the Conradi Winery operated on this land. Another casualty of Prohibition, the vineyards and winery fell out of use until 1974 when Robert Keenan arrived.
All that was left was crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks which told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure and the winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977.
Today, Keenan Winery is a solar powered, sustainably farmed vineyard producing some of the most awarded handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley. In the last seven vintages, thirty-eight wines have been awarded 90 to 97 points by Robert Parker Jr.
The team works in concert to live up to the Keenan legacy. Michael Keenan is the son of founder, Robert Keenan. As the current President, Michael brings the same love of Spring Mountain and its wines as his father. Consulting Winemaker, Nils Venge, brings 20 years of winemaking experience to Keenan. He was the first American winemaker to ever receive a score of “100” from Robert Parker, Jr. of The Wine Advocate for one of his 1985 Cabernet Sauvignons. Randy Kewell, assistant winemaker, is in charge of all cellar operations from crush to bottling. And the General Manager, Matt Gardner, has been with the winery since 1994. He and his wife live on the property and assure Keenan continues to produce the best wine possible.
