Winemaker Scott Harvey, voted one of California’s top ten winemakers, got his first taste of fine wine and winemaking as a high school exchange student in the Rhineland Pfalz region of Germany. He enrolled in California State University at Sacramento before beginning enology training at Montevina Winery. He went back to Germany to apprentice at the prestigious K. Fitz-Ritter Winery while attending the Weinbau Schule in Neustadt. After returning to the U.S. and Montevina Winery Scott eventually accepted a position as Head Winemaker for Story Winery at the young age of 23. Today Scott is credited with putting Amador County wines on the map and has participated in the formation of Folie a Deux Winery that produced the well known ‘Menage a Trois’ line of wines. In 2004 Folie a Deux was sold to Sutter Home/Trinchero Winery leaving Scott and his wife Jana in a perfect position to create Scott Harvey Wines.
About the Vineyards:The year was 1869. Andrew Johnson was handing the presidency over to Ulysses S. Grant. The 1st pro baseball games commenced – Cin Reds 24, Cin Amateurs 15. Black Friday; Wall St. panic after Gould & Fisk attempted to corner gold. A hotel in Boston became the 1st to have indoor plumbing. Steam power brakes were patented by George Westinghouse. The 1st westbound train arrived in San Francisco. And, America’s Oldest Zinfandel Vineyard was planted. Vineyard 1869’s existence was noted in a deed from an 1869 U.S. Geological Survey, making it America’s oldest documented Zinfandel vineyard. For 143 years these ancient vines have plunged their roots through twenty-five feet of multiple soil types in search of water. In the 1890s, the vines survived the nearly total destruction of California’s vineyards by a root louse called phylloxera. Due to moonlit nights of unregulated distillation, Vineyard 1869 also survived Prohibition. It wasn’t until 1984, when the vineyard was purchased by Scott Harvey, that the wines were coaxed back into producing small yields of high quality, first-growth Zinfandel.
