Originating in 1973, Sonoma-Cutrer’s foundation was built upon a selection of several key vineyard properties in the benchlands, hillsides and rocky foothills in what later became recognized as the Sonoma Coast Appellation – an area with long, even growing seasons due to the cool and foggy coastal climate.
A winery built under the “spare no expense” model is now famous for producing some of the most renowned Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the world. There is an additional uniqueness to Sonoma-Cutrer. In 1985 Sonoma-Cutrer wanted to create an activity and environment that would be unique among wineries not only in the United States but also around the world to reinforce the winery’s philosophy of making Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. History was made that year when two world class croquet courts were built in front of the winery.
Originally a winery that made only Chardonnay, Sonoma-Cutrer has evolved and now produces many labels from both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties. They are very particular about their winemaking techniques. Chardonnay is produced in their main facility while Pinot Noir has its own facility a short distance away. This allows the winemaker to practice hands-on, artisan craftsmanship of the individual varietals.
