Vine Cliff Winery

The fascinating story of Vine Cliff Winery dates back to the 1800’s. The original vines were planted by one of the early Napa pioneers, George Yount (Yountville’s namesake) in 1830. After Mr. Yount’s death, Vine Cliff came under new ownership and by the 1880’s was an impressive and thriving winemaking facility. Perhaps most notable and memorable about the 1880’s and 1890’s is that Vine Cliff became a social retreat and playground for rich and famous San Franciscans.  But the good times did not linger long. Between the phylloxera infestation that killed off all the vines and the death of the then owner, the property fell into deep disrepair and ultimately became a ghost winery.

The property remained abandoned for 85 years until Nell and Charles Sweeney purchased it in the 1980’s, breathing new life into the estate. By 1995 Vine Cliff was a bustling winery, once again known as one of the top winemaking facilities in California. Since then Vine Cliff has gained the attention of many wine critics with stellar reviews. But don’t take their word for it. Try for yourself.
